Back from our Ultrasound: it's a ...............

GIRL!
We decided at the last second to find out, as she was very against showing us her "goods" the entire ultrasound. More on the U/S to come soon....but here are the pictures........
Keifer is trying to figure out what a baby sister means?
Mama makes it sound like it'll be fun!
Who knows?
Here she is: our Soup baby #2: Kyla!

Profile and body
Foot (it looked so big, just like big sissy!!)
profile
the tell-tale "girl" 3 lines ( no appendages sticking out! :)
Kyla was yawning here: it's a weird angle, so it's JUST her mouth, no other face to be seen -but still, pretty cool! :) She was tired from my lunch!
I'll give you the details soon- but all is perfect! She is measuring exactly one day off of my due date of June 18!!!

Halfway mark: The belly pics

Twenty weeks and growing! Hard to believe I've reached the halfway mark and it's literally been a blur to me!
I've been feeling so much better, and even took a yoga class the other night. It wasn't as 'smooth' as I had hoped it would be, but I was able to do some one legged balancing poses, so I was proud of myself for that!

What babycenter.com tells us: Your baby weighs about 10 1/2 ounces now. He's also around 6 1/2 inches long from head to bottom and about 10 inches from head to heel — the length of a banana. (For the first 20 weeks, when a baby's legs are curled up against his torso and hard to measure, measurements are taken from the top of his head to his bottom — the "crown to rump" measurement. After 20 weeks, he's measured from head to toe.)He's swallowing more these days, which is good practice for his digestive system. He's also producing meconium, a black, sticky by-product of digestion. This gooey substance will accumulate in his bowels, and you'll see it in his first soiled diaper (some babies pass meconium in the womb or during delivery).See what your baby looks like this week.

Here I am , sporting the bella band *aka sleeve at Motherhood* (thanks, Karri & Suzanne!) I still can't wear maternity pants without them getting loose and falling off me. I can wear 2 pair of regular pants still, and my other jeans fit well under the bella bands, and zip about halfway up with the band on. Popping, but not TOO bad, or so I thought....
My belly at 20 weeks after a Chinese dinner !
the belly button is starting to spread!
And here are my 20 week belly pictures from my PG with Keifer!
Here I THOUGHT I wasn't getting that big, then suddenly I POPPED out! I guess I wasn't as big at 20 weeks with Keifer as I remembered myself being! (maybe it's the whole "getting used" to the idea of actually gaining this much weight that isn't as bad this time? Hmmm....)
The bump isn't as noticeable THEN!

20 weeks PG!

I'm 20 weeks PG today! WHOA! Halfway there! CJ and I have our big U/S tomorrow- we're doing a Level 2 , as I'll be 35 when Soupbaby #2 is born. I don't "think" we're going to find out the gender, but you never know, we may break down once we see our beautiful son/daughter floating inside mommy's tummy in front of our eyes.
Ugg, I'm so excited. It hasn't really hit me until just now. I've been too busy!
More to come! Vote in my poll! :) Just for fun- I really DO NOT know what we are going to do!

K's fave book

Lately, every night, K has been requesting that CJ or I read her Daddy is a Doodlebug. For some reason, this catchy book that we've had forever has suddenly become so fun to her, and she is reading it along with us! So cute!
She likes to narrate when the daddy "go upstairs", when the daddy plays "peek" (peek a boo) -at first the daddy was crying in her view, but now he's playing peek. She also loves the language, and will say the last line of the catch phrase "daddy is a doodle bug, and I'm a doodlebug, too!" along with us.

This AM, as I was dressing her for Elaine's, she said to be "apple strudel bug"! Yep, our girl not only loves to eat apples and applesauce, but she also loves to read about them! LOL.

I also got a few new books from my monthly teacher Scholastic book order. I got her Everybody poops, as I'm sure that is a topic that will be so fascinating in our home in not too long (currently toots are pretty popular), as well as a book with stickers on getting dressed, and a Sesame Street book about brushing teeth. This cool book has a pop-up page with a monster opening his mouth, and a toothbrush (paper) on a string that you use to brush the monster's teeth. We're hoping that K practicing on her monster will help give her the help she needs in understanding that we just don't SUCK on the toothbrush- we brush our teeth with it! LOL. Ahh, how mommy loves to get books for our girl. Oh, and I also (spur of the moment) got her the book What a Wonderful World, because the pictures are beautiful (including LOTS of diversity, which is important to me), and I love the lyrics (which are the song of the same name).

* Have read this before*

I've finally found my reading mojo!

My reading for 2009 has officially begun!

I just finished a book (FINALLY) and will start a new "50 Book Challenge for 2009" post! YAY!
I just finished Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea by Chelsea Handler, and seriously, almost wet my pants laughing out loud throughout most of it. Granted, I'm 20 weeks PG and the bladder is beginning to get touchy, but this was some funny stuff. It's not for the faint of heart- she gets pretty offensive in some of her talk, but it is hysterical if you like this kind of sarcastic humor!

YAY! Soupy is BACK on the reading train!

ABC's and art

Our girl is an ABC nut. She loves to sing the "ABC"song all.the.time. and when she sees words, she says "ABC's". She pretends to read many of her books to us lately- complete with holding it in one hand (like a teacher - LOL). Here she is lining up her letters a few weeks ago.

And, I've mentioned it before, our girl also love love loves to color, especially with markers. We started her on the crayons, and she did well with them, but of course, the appeal of the marker is much greater to the little ones. She'll usually ask CJ or I to sit down with her and color, and is good about requesting her "color book" or "blue marker". She is pretty good about keeping the markers on the paper, but occasionally gets carried away with drawing on her hands and face. I was laughing so hard at her last night - I asked her if she wanted to grow a mustache?
What you talkin' 'bout, mama? Yes, I know I'm a silly girl. Thank goodness the markers come off in the tub (or with a baby wipe!)
And I love this picture: it is the "aftermath of an artist" - one who puts much time and devotion to her "works" or art.

Keifer quotes

Things we've been hearing around the Soup household these days:

*K will try to sing along with songs on the radio, and try to repeat the radio call letters back- the other day, as one station was saying their "letters" , she repeated them correctly back.

*She also repeats words she hears on the radio or after CJ and I. This AM on our drive in, she repeated the words "Super bowl" after a comment about it. Funny how she picks up on certain words or phrases.

*If CJ or I go into the garage, for whatever reason (garbage, to get something, to get something from the garage fridge,) K will say "Mama, pop" or "Daddy, pop", as if that's the only thing we go out there for.

*When we leave in the AM, K will ask me, as I turn onto the road to leave, "mama, what doin'?". I tell her mama is driving her to Elaine's and myself to work. Therefore, whenever we leave to go ANYWHERE now, she says "Elaine's house".

*I've mentioned before K now knows "slippery" after a few weeks of slippery road conditions, so now, whenever we drive, it's also always "slippery".

*We are lucky enough to have a library a block away from our house. K is now used to me either bringing her in with me or dropping books off at the book drop. Every time she sees the building she says, "mama, books" and will start trying to sing the "Library" song she hears on an episode of Sesame Street. (I do have to say, I love the educational factor of Sesame Street. I am constantly admiring the way they introduce ideas to the kids).

*When we come home from wherever we are, K now knows we must stop to get the mail. Therefore, as we turn onto our road, we hear "mama, mail! Mama, mail!".

*I have stopped once at a Culver's on the way home after work and we stopped once at Taco Bell with her after going out. Now, whenever we pass the two fast food chains, K recognizes them (how??!) and says, "Mama, eat". Yep, little woman, mama was eating (but not well! LOL).

*Every time we leave the house, K has to call out "bye, Sager, by Treble", and now is saying goodbye to them in the house, too. This AM, she gave Sager a hug goodbye. She loves her puppers and is constantly wanting to know where they are.

So, yes, we are pretty proud of our girl and her vocabulary. I am in constant amazement at her sentences and length of sentences. I swear- it's the books and the fact that we narrate everything we do with her and actually talk TO her. Man, we love her.

Here comes ELMO!!!

Yes, our girl was EXCITED to see Elmo come out. Can you tell (gee-the hands in the mouth were a dead giveaway of sensory overload! LOL)

K's first sighting of Bert at Elmo Live:

This was K's first experience at a concert type event. Bert was the first character to come out at Elmo Live - and this was her honest reaction: a bit of shell shock and waving madly! Mama was giggling, but fighting back tears. I wipe them at the end - yes, I am a big dork! LOL - but my girl's joy makes me so happy I CRY!

Another day, another doc....

..well, in our case, the same doctor.

Let's see. K slept great last night until the Motrin wore off,the she was up at 1:30 AM with a burning 104 fever. Her heartbeat was so fast, and she was having fast breathing, so we nebbed her, thinking that would help. Well, that helped get her all wound up- CJ and I forgot that when we neb her at night, sometimes she gets goofy about getting back into bed -screaming "no no no" like we're torturing her by putting her in the crib.

So, we spent the night taking turns holding her in the rocking chair and she slept on us. What a fun night. She was up for the day around 5:30 AM, too early for my liking after not having slept all night. She was better - we could tell, but "goofy". Dancing all stumbly around, and just being silly. She refused to eat, but had some Pedialyte. I called Urgent Care to see if the strep test was done: nope, not yet. Results were "pending" and could take up to 24 hours after last night.

We spent the AM playing and I put her in for a nap around 9ish. Well, I let her scream for almost an hour, because the girl needed to sleep. She finally calmed down and slept for over an hour- until the mail lady brought us a package and the dogs woke her up (*grr*).

We had a half bowl of soup and then she said "bath, bath" and climbed the stairs. So I stripped her for the tub. As I stripped her, I noticed her fingertips and lips were almost purple (bluish) so I made the water warmer and quickly cleaned her up. She started trembling and I got her quickly dried off, "lotion all done" (meaning "no lotion today, mama"), and wrapped in a blanket on the couch.

I called the nurse line again at Urgent Care. Test results were back: negative for strep, and it was up to me if I wanted to bring her in or not (regarding the blue /purple fingers).

I force fed some more Motrin in her, and packed her up. Off to the doc we went, and saw the same one as last night. Luckily he knew our story. He said the tonsils today looked "75% better" than last night (thank God) and that if the fever isn't broken on it's own by tomorrow night, then we'll go back in for some blood work, and who knows what else. She was much better in the office (thanks to the Motrin) but hated the exam by the doctor. I'm sure people thought we were torturing her in the room when he checked her throat. "All done, all done!" she screamed.
Ugg.

She slept on the drive home and is napping again. Please sleep, baby and let mama rest, too.

Updated: K is still really sick

CJ and I just got home from bring K to urgent care tonight. Her temp was up to 103, and she was still refusing to eat or drink anything.
The doc swore- after her physical test- that he thinks its strep throat. Ears are clear, no tenderness, swollen glands in throat, stinky breath, high temp. Her throat/tonsils were really enlarged and pussy looking- he showed us her swab and it was bloody :(.
The quick test was negative. So......we opted for the shot and hope the morning "overnight" test shows that it IS strep. Otherwise, we bring her back in for more tests.
We have one sick girl on our hands.......

All she kept saying was "mommy, owie, mommy, owie" *sob*

Sick baby

I picked up K at Elaine's last night, to find her feverish and lethargic. All the kids were getting their outdoor gear on, but poor K was laying her head on a chair and moaning. When she saw me, she climbed on me and moaned,"Mama, mama". Poor girl. She slept the drive home (which she never does) and I put her in her crib. She took some Motrin and 1/2 hour later, she was calling me to get out of the crib. We played for a bit, and she ate some dinner (she LOVED the Morningstar farms mini veggie corn dogs!). Then, we played some more with daddy and I got her ready for bed. There was no fighting bed time, and down she went.

We checked her a few times during the night and she was still warm. I made the call at 5AM to stay home this AM with her, and CJ would take over duties in the afternoon, as I had kids to teach and a grad credit book club class. She was up at 7, and thanks to Tylenol, in a great mood. She didn't want to eat breakfast. However, I laid her down for nap with a bottle of water (beep beep -driving the mommy bus to hell for the bottle) and she slept 2 hours, which she never does anymore, and woke up at 11 burning up. Her temp was in the 101-102 area. Then our girl refused to eat or drink ANYTHING and screamed when we tried to medicate her.

I left for work, and daddy CJ called the nurse line. They said not to worry unless her temp gets to around 105 (which is scary to me), but CJ finally got our girl to drink some Pediasure mixed with some Tylenol (or Motrin- we keep changing off and on). Apparently it worked, because when I called to check on her, our happy, chatty baby was back.
I don't know if it's teeth or if she' s fighting something, but it sure sucks to have a sick baby.

I will try to get our latest pics and dropshots uploaded for you to share in, and my PG updates. It has been a hectic week- we had baby ballroom on Monday night ( K was overjoyed to be back dancing), I had a church growth committee meeting Tuesday night, and last night was sick baby). I'm currently 19 weeks, which blows me away. If you think about it, if I do end up getting a C-section a week before my due date, then technically our soup baby #2 is HALF COOKED ALREADY!! WOW!

Yummy Recipe Rec:

Black Bean, Corn and Zucchini Enchiladas:

Um, YUM! I made this last night and loved it so much, I had to share!

I copied
this from myrecipes.com; a girl on my message board had shared a bunch of her recipes she was trying out and this sounded good (and easy!) to me.
I'm so glad I tried it - it was delicious and oh-so easy (for busy moms or dads!). Even CJ liked it, which is saying a lot if there is no meat in the meal.
I didn't have time to make their homemade enchilada sauce: I just used canned, and it was still really good!

Ingredients
1 teaspoon canola oil
2 cups diced zucchini
1 (10-ounce) package frozen whole-kernel corn
1 (15-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
3 cups
Enchilada Sauce, divided
Cooking spray
8 (8-inch) whole wheat tortillas
2 cups (8 ounces) shredded reduced-fat cheddar cheese, divided

Preparation
Preheat oven to 350°.
Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add 2 cups zucchini and corn; sauté for 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Remove from heat, and stir in beans.
Spread 1 cup Enchilada Sauce in the bottom of a 13 x 9-inch baking dish coated with cooking spray. Spoon about 1/2 cup zucchini mixture down center of 1 tortilla; sprinkle with 2 tablespoons cheese, and roll up. Place seam-side down in baking dish. Repeat procedure with remaining tortillas, zucchini mixture, and 14 tablespoons cheese. Spread remaining 2 cups sauce evenly over enchiladas.
Cover with foil; bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Uncover; top with remaining 1 cup cheese. Bake, uncovered, for 10 minutes or until cheese melts.

The weekend

Well, the weekend was a blur, as usual.

Friday night, the snow started falling, and I went to bed. I knew I was coming down with a cold, and I passed out just as soon as Chris could take over on Keifer duties. It was only 5:30 PM and I was out cold, until 7:00AM the next morning. I still have a majorly runny nose, but feel a little bit better than I did yesterday morning.

Yesterday, CJ and I took K to her first "rock concert" for babies: Elmo's Green Thumb! More to come on that, but she was shell shocked and loved it. The pics really don't do our experience justice.

Then, we had to stop at BRU to pick up a few things ((*coupon time!*)) and then did USA Baby for some early double stroller shopping. Ahhh, the headaches that will bring. LOL. K was with us, so it was a perfect opportunity to throw her in the front, or side, or back of all the doubles we tried out. She wasn't ready for the Sit & stand: she fell backwards (mom of the year here). So far, we are in LOVE with the BOB double, but the price tag is scary. It was really cute, though: K kept trying to push all the strollers, and then she'd say "too big, too big". What? LOL.

It was cute, too, I found CJ researching double strollers on strollers.com this morning. He is one daddy that really gets into stroller shopping: he went nutso doing it when I was PG with Keifer. And in all reality (really) it's ME that really has to make the final decision, as I AM the one who does most of the walking/pushing the strollers with Keifer (and will in the future). I usually walk the fur kids everyday in the warm weather, and need something easy and light, but sturdy for outdoors; something that I can manhandle two frisky dogs on leashes with!

Today, I got to sleep in a bit (woke up drooling, mouth open and snotty nose, oh-so lovely) and got ready to meet the ECSE girls up in Maple Grove (our usual eating out spot) for a lunch. And what a lunch it was. I miss these ladies- I wish we all lived closer. We sat and ate Mexican (my fave, I could literally drink the salsa, it was so good), and we ended up sitting there for 2 1/2 hours. We made plans for next month, hoping to do a hotel overnight with the hubbies and our kiddos.

I got to stop at Target for some odds and ends, and ended up finding a few cute tops (sweater, sweatshirt) for myself that are in the "regular" section (not maternity) but still look decent, for clearance prices. Score! Then, I got home to find that Keifer had a nasty blow out and wasn't feeling well. Poor K. After some good cuddles, she decided to play hard, and she went to bed at 6:30 again tonight. She had a busy weekend!

Tomorrow I have work off, and K doesn't have daycare, so it'll be a mommy and baby girl day (and fur kids, of course). Then, we'll hopefully get to Baby Ballroom: last week it was canceled due to the nasty weather.

Happy birthday, Emilie

I just wanted to send a little prayers out to Emilie's husband and 2 boys, on the day of what would've been her 41st Birthday.
Sending prayers to them, as well as her family.
The MN ladies are getting together tonight in honor of Emilie. I'm not able to attend tonight, but my spirit will be there, toasting Emilie.

Where or where can my reading time be?

After ending the year in a bang, with more than 50+ books under my belt, I've started this new year not being so interested in books. What the heck? What is wrong with me? Is it my tiredness, hitting me in the "lack of desire to read" way? I always love to read. However, it must be a story that grabs me from the get go with some type of hook. Lately, I've started a few books, but returned them within a few days to the library for lack of interest.

I also have magazines with articles in them I really would like to look at, but I don't. I just don't have the energy at night to devote to even scanning my eyes across the page. What is wrong with me?

I have a book to read for my district book club, one in which I'll get 2 graduate board credits for taking. I haven't even cracked it, and I need to finish half of it in 2 weeks time. I also have had another book from the library for a few days, and again, haven't had any interest to open.
Please send me your "reading" vibes. I miss it.

Baby: it's COLD outside!

We woke up today to -25 below zero- without the wind chill. My GOODNESS, it hurts to be outside. Many of my friends up north have no school today, as THEIR districts were smart and canceled school. This weather is insane. Makes me whine for the days of balmy Mexico a few weeks back.

Because the roads are covered in black ice from the cold, driving into work Tuesday and yesterday took over an hour and *around* 20 minutes or so. Try that with a hungry girl who likes to talk non-stop in the backseat and what a drive. I will say, though, she does know "slippery" now - so to Keifer "slippery" and "cold- brrr" goes hand in hand.

This AM, I was up at 5:30 AM showering and K heard me, so she decided it was Elmo time. Uggg. So we were all up early and on the road by 6:35, and made it to Elaine's in record time. It's amazing what an extra 30 minutes on the road (early) will do for you. It was also nice to get to work and not have to rush around like a maniac getting things ready.

OB check up today: "My turn, my turn"

I had my OB check up today with Addie- and everything seems to be going well. Thank God I made it there safely: it's started snowing again all day long here in MN, and I left work an hour early to get to my OB that usually takes about 15 minutes. I picked up our girl, and we were on the road. We passed about 6 cars in the ditch and two cars ahead of us bumped bumpers and pulled over to inspect the damage as we crept by them. Whew. Daddy CJ even met us at the doctor, and we got to hear Soup Baby #2's heartbeat again! What a beautiful sound! Today, it was in the low 160's - a bit higher than any baby has had so far! LOL.

Addie and I went over everything- I didn't have many questions other than how long can I fly- because we are debating on spending some $$ to have me and Keifer fly out to visit Mooshie and company over my spring break (the early part of the week that K turns 2). I can fly safely (she says) up until around 35 weeks!

This PG, I've only gained about 11.5 pounds! WOW! No wonder most of my jeans still fit somewhat. I swear by now, I must have gained at least 20 pounds the first time! LOL. Addie told me that is very common in 2nd pregnancies, as well as the baby being so much lower this time (like right on top of my bladder!!). When Addie had the doppler over the baby to listen to the heartbeat, I felt the little soupster fluttering away like crazy inside there! It was almost surreal; like a little fishie just swimming away, trying to get away from that "thing" that was prodding at it!
When we listened to the heartbeat, we asked Keifer if that was her brother or sister? She said no, and proceeded to lift HER shirt to show us her belly (even though her onsie got in the way). As I was stepping down from lying on the table, she started to climb UP, and said, "my turn, my turn", so Addie (kind as she is) let Keifer think we were listening to HER baby inside her tummy (or whatever she seems to think we were doing! LOL).

Busy, busy

The Soup household is as busy as ever. We only have one child, but I swear, it is insane sometimes how busy we get.
Yesterday, K was overjoyed when Papa Dale, Nana, and Great-Auntie Barbara (she loved saying that name all day!) came to visit. We had lunch at the Cracker Barrel, my mom's favorite, and K indulged in lots of roast beef with her daddy. We were happy, as she has been refusing to eat all proteins lately at home, except for cheese - which then binds her up, which in turn doesn't help her pooping issues.

Anyhoo, then K napped and Daddy and Papa put together her new Little Tikes Kitchen. It is a dream boat of a kitchen. I had read online in reviews that people weren't happy with the amount of time it takes to put together. Well, Papa and Daddy took around 3 hours, give or take, helping each other and voila: it was done. K was a little stunned, to say the least. She was unusually quiet as she investigated the kitchen, and ALL of adults played with the knobs and doors, delighting in how cute it all is. Eventually, she got the hang of it, and soon, was very seriously cooking away to her heart's content. My mom (Nana) also brought her a new step stool for the bathroom, complete with Elmo on it. Well, our girl insists that this is her chair, that needs to be next to the coffee table, and this is where she brings all the food she "cooks". Ahh, that girl has her own mind. **pics of the new Top Chef to come soon!*

Today, we had ushering duties at church, which is always a tich difficult because our girl screams and cries when we leave her in the nursery. We're not sure why: she usually does well with other kids and people, but she is so insecure there. Eventually she was OK, and we took her back for the end of the service, after we did our collection.

Mama and K took a nap, and then we visited my coworker Nicole (Hi, Nicole!) who had a baby girl, Elizabeth, almost 8 weeks ago (already!?). Elizabeth is a doll! So beautiful and tiny and made me itch for our newborn to be here. *sigh*. Keifer didn't mind me holding her and even brought Elizabeth's Nuk for me to give her. However, we found out that Keifer has trouble getting along with others her own age, as Nicole's little Patrick is 2 months younger than K, and all K did was screech and wail and use her "mine" and "no" most of the time we were there. Ahh, K, the joys of growing up and learning how to get along with others. Patrick is just a dolly, too. What a fun house!

Tonight, I'm settling down to watch the Golden Globes, which is my equivalent to the Super Bowl! I love movies, and I love this awards show, as they are a bit looser than the stuffier Academy Awards (Oscars). I'm off for some rainbow sherbet (yum) and to cuddle with my Tboy, who is already snoozing on "his" blanket, waiting for me.

Tomorrow, it's OB appointment after work and the K and I are going to attempt to make it to Baby Ballroom. She doesn't realize this, and I'm so excited to get back into the dancing groove with her! YAY!

17 weeks update

I am 17 weeks PG! We have our Level 2 ultrasound scheduled for Friday, January 30, at 1:00 PM. I don't think we're going to find out what Soup Baby #2 is this time!!! I've having a Level 2 because I will be 35 when I give birth to the baby, although my OB mused on the fact that my egg donor's eggs are probably a lot younger than mine would have been, so she's not too worried about anything. *knock on wood*

Babycenter.com tells us: How your baby's growing:Your baby's skeleton is changing from soft cartilage to bone, and the umbilical cord — her lifeline to the placenta — is growing stronger and thicker. Your baby weighs 5 ounces now (about as much as a turnip), and she's around 5 inches long from head to bottom. She can move her joints, and her sweat glands are starting to develop.

Here we are!

I know, I've been slacking this week in the blogging department. Sorry. I came back to work on Monday and it feels like this has been the longest.week.ever. in eternity. I am tired. Tired and feeling blah, which is common here in MN, during the coldest month of the year, and especially after just coming home from a tropical climate. *sigh*.

Life is going just fine in our house. Keifer was overjoyed to be back at Elaine's house- she literally danced and shrieked with joy when we walked in on Tuesday morning. This morning, she greeted Elaine again with a hug. K has also started telling me "love you" when I drop her off. I always ask her for a hug and kiss goodbye, to which I get her pursed little fish lips kiss, and she'll tell me "love you" after I tell her "love you". Ahhh, such a sweetie. Elaine reported yesterday that K had a "loud" day, which isn't surprising. It seems the more she is around other kids, and animated, chatty ones at that, the louder she becomes in imitation.

Work is moving right along and busy. Being in the special education area, there is always work, it seems. I started my second morning group of 4 new boys on Wednesday, and they are little angels. I love working with them. But it can make for a tiring day after teaching 3 classes of different children.

I was successful and made it through 50 minutes (out of 60) at Kickbox Jam on Tuesday night. I didn't push myself, and didn't do any major jumping around, but man , it felt really good! I want to try and make this PG different (in the exercise realm) of how my PG with Keifer was.

Wednesday night, Keifer played "night night" with me and CJ. She told us "daddy sleeping" (complete with her hand cupped next to her ear, with her head cocked sideways), and "mama sleeping". CJ and I pretended to be asleep on pillows on the living room floor, and then she would squeal with delight "wake up, daddy!", and push us to "wake up".

I'm 17 weeks PG and flutters are still off and on inside me. Suddenly, only 2 pair of regular pants fit me anymore and I had to break out the maternity pants this week. However, the were falling off me by the end of the day, so I'm somewhat at an in-between stage with this whole PG belly thing.

Papa and Nana are coming down tomorrow to bring K a belated Christmas gift: a pretend kitchen, which I know she will be delighted with. She loves to pretend cook at Elaine's and with us in the kitchen (with her measuring spoons and cups on the kitchen floor), so I' m excited to see her face when it is all put together!

"Try it?"

It's so fun to watch Keifer venture into the world of pretend play. Here, she wasn't feeling well our last night in Mexico. She was taking care of her baby doll, and in this clip, she asks baby to "try it" (the bottle) and says, "no?". Ahh, CJ and I were dying with laughter and our hearts were swelling with love watching her.

"That's Elm-o's World!"

Yes, our girl belongs on stage someday. This is just "her" being herself. Enjoy.Clearly, the girl loves her some Elmo.

Prayers

Keifer hears the Thank You Prayer every night before we tuck her into bed, either CJ, or I, or usually (we try) both of us together. We always give hugs and kisses (her pursing her lips), and then Mama usually reads the book while daddy holds her on his shoulder and she helps turn the pages. We've found out in the past week or so that Keifer now knows this prayer book by heart! She is able to chant it along with me, and will finish each sentence with the word fully recognizable. She also makes sure that she is the one to close the book at the end, and say "Ahh-men". *sigh*. What a sweetie.

Mexico for Christmas: Trip recap

Finally! CJ is at the Vikes game, and mama and Keifer just had lunch, play time and now our girl is down for a nap. I can sit and reflect on our whirlwind of a week over Christmas in beautiful Mexico.

How can people not want to live there ( in Mexico)? I do. The weather is usually always perfect; slightly humid, but breezy from the ocean. Fresh melons and food galore (at the resorts).
Ahh, it is bliss.
One thing, though, traveling with a 20 month old who decides to get 2 of her 4 incisors during the trip is not always, well, relaxing. I was surprised when CJ made a comment to me on day 2 or 3: "I thought this would be more relaxing". Um, relaxing with a 20 month old who is curious and wants to be independent? I think not! HA!

Anyhoo, I'll break it down.

Packing: CJ and I were able to pack all our things into 1 suitcase each. For Keifer, we had 2 suitcases: one full of her clothes, etc., and another stacked with diapers, wipes, beach toys, books, and just a few toys that I thought she'd like. Wrong. Toys weren't really high on her list of things to do down there. She was more interested in finding out how the telephone worked in our room, or pushing her stroller around, or begging us to either "go swimmin'", or "go walkin". We over packed the toys, and honestly, I didn't think we brought that many. Same for books. We had a perfect number of diapers, swim diapers, and sunscreen, etc., so that was good.

Traveling: traveling to Mexico was great, even with a few speed bumps along the way. We left our house around 7AM, which is the same time Keifer and I leave for our daily commute to work and Elaine's anyways, so she was up and ready. She didn't enjoy being in her stroller (which was small, lightweight, and perfect for this trip!) in the ticketing line or the security line, which were both huge (as it was December 20), but she did OK once we got through the lines and let her roam a bit. We found my parents, brother and his friend Katie (who just turned 21 the day before) at the gate. Keifer was overjoyed to see her Papa and Nana, and played flirtatious, hard -to-get girl with her Uncle. We boarded with no problems, gate checked our stroller and ended up having an extra seat in between us (CJ and I) so we scored with letting Keifer sit in the seat with a seat belt. The downside: we had to wait about an hour for a connecting flight to land so 5 passengers could transfer to our plane (the weather was getting horrendous, MN ended up getting about 9 inches of snow that day). We all were nervous about getting out of MN at all, but after the hour, the people boarded. Then, we had to go through the de-icing process (the plane) which took another 45 minutes of waiting, and waiting, and well, waiting. I have to say, Keifer did a fantastic job on the plane. We had Elmo on CJ's Iphone, books, snacks, and we let her roam to see her Papa and Nana and Uncle and Katie. She napped on the way down for about an hour, spread out between CJ and I. We landed in Cancun, and there, waiting to go through customs, our girl got a bit ansty. I don't blame her. She barely ate "real" food for us, and was tired from a full day of traveling and waiting. We had another 45 minute trip in a shuttle van to our resort, but she did OK in that. Again, no car seat, but we buckled her in: she thought she was hot stuff. We just prayed for no accidents!

The hotel: The hotel was a dream. Last April, CJ and I had stayed at a Riu Resort, The Riu Palace Riveria Maya, and loved every bit of it. This time, we stayed at the Riu Playacar, which is just as nice, but smaller and sort of a step down from the hugeness of the Palace Riveria Maya. There are a total of 5 or 6 Riu resorts all within a few blocks from each other, and you can look at all of them, which CJ and I did with Keifer on one sunny morning (on one of our many "walking" trips). We really liked them all, and thought the Palace Riviera Maya was pretty much the same thing as the Palace Mexico, both having a very elegant feel to them and large properties and pools, but the Riu Tequila didn't have a beach front access (it is across the road). The Riu Yucatan was a bit more of the smaller version of a palace, yet bigger than the Playacar. We liked the Yucatan because there were monkeys in the trees right above you, which if you have children, is pretty awesome to see! I never saw anything in the listings about the monkeys in the trees, so that was a really cool surprise!

Overall, most of the all-inclusives down there are amazing, not just the Riu. I think it's all in what you want to spend, and what you expect from a trip like this. I heard some women complaining on the beach one day that our resort didn't have the cabana umbrella's for sunshades on the beach like another resort did. To me, that wasn't important, as there were a zillion trees with shade right up the beach from us, so why bitch and moan about something as little and petty as that? It's vacation. The only one thing I can think of that would've been nice would've been to have a bathtub for Keifer, as only the Palace resorts have them ( I found out). We are lucky Keifer likes showers, as that's all there was to bathe her.

The food was amazing. All -inclusive is the way to go at any resort, in my opinion. You get all the free food and drinks you want, anytime, all the time. There are a few select 'reservation" themed-dining restaurants at all the resorts, and this time, we only took advantage of one night of that, the Steak House. Keifer had a hard time staying up pat 6:30 or 7PM, especially after refusing naps on a few days, teething, and playing hard in the pool and in the sun all day. She passed out most nights on her tray of food, or in her Papa's arms, waiting for us to finish. CJ and I never enjoyed a full meal together- he was usually bringing her back to the room for bed. That was the one hard part- because dinner isn't started until 6:30 and the reservation restaurants don't start until 6:45 - with the food coming closer to 7:30 or so.

The workers bust their butts to work for you all.the.time. I've never experienced such service as CJ and I have the 3 times we've now been to Mexico resorts. They are always cleaning, and always friendly. Keifer made many friends, as she captivated most every worker who came across her path. By the end of the week, she was independently saying "hola' to them (smiles).

As for Keifer and having food to eat, it wasn't an issue. I asked the workers in the buffet restaurant where we ate all the time if I could take a box of milk back to my room (where there were fridges). No problem They gladly got me what I wanted, and we had no issues with the milk down there- it was pasteurized. We had plenty of foods to choose from all the time, and she had a variety of foods each and every day. However, she preferred the melons and the popcorn, which resulted in a few wet, runny poops on two separate days. Oye.

I loved the resort. They have entertainment for you every night, and the entertainment staff works hard during the day with a schedule of activities. On Christmas Day, they had a special Children's program, with all the workers dressed up like elves, dancing and singing. Then, they invited all the children in the audience up on stage to visit with Santa and get a "gift" from the resort. One of the "elves" took Keifer up, but she didn't want anything to do with it, so mama had to rescue her. We still got a bag for her, which contained the Santa hat, a bag of candy and a Riu Tshirt. How sweet.

My parents and Darren and Katie enjoyed Michael Jackson on Christmas Eve night. That was a hoot. So fun to see. CJ and I took advantage one day of the beach front massage tent. Ahh, pure heaven. Laying on a table, with the beach sounds in the air, the waves crashing, the breeze blowing and a massage worker working out all the knots and kinks from your travels and hard bedding (oh yeah, the beds? hard as rocks at every resort we've been to so far! LOL). There was also a Starbucks right across the street at the marketplace, which many people delighted in visiting ( ahh, I got to experience my favorite Chai tea lattes!)

The pools and beach area are amazing. Keifer loved the kiddie pool- all 2 feet of it. She would climb the ladder, jump into whoever was waiting's arms, and repeat the cycle. She wasn't too sure of the big pool, but enjoyed the swim up bar and requesting drinks, to the bartenders' delight. She and mama shared many pina coladas- complete with an orange garnish that she dipped in her drink. Many people commented on her adorable looks, her ability to sit and drink at the bar, and her MANY swimsuits -ahh yes. The swimsuits. We had 5 total with us, which we needed, as she would swim in the morning, then take off for lunch and nap. Not wanting to put a wet suit back on, we put her in a new dryer suit, which was just fine. It worked great!

Christmas Eve dinner was the most amazing dinner ever. They took reservations and had the whole resort eat in 2 separate shifts. They decorated the entire buffet with fruit and ice sculptures, and had every meat and seafood dish possible for eating. I was in hog heaven and felt like bursting when we left! I have pictures of the many fruit and ice sculptures and food, if anyone is interested. I found out, while waiting in line for the dessert choices, that many people there were Canadian, Midwesterners (Chicago, Minnesota), or European! At the pool, we met some kind London-ers, some Swedes, and some Italians. On our Tulum trip, my parents and I also met some more Canadians.
Here we are on Christmas Eve, as a family minus CJ. He had partaken in too many drinks the day and night before, so unfortunately, Christmas Eve was not enjoyed with my husband, or K's daddy. Hurmpf. Oh well, his sickness was his payment enough. That didn't stop us from enjoying our time eating and enjoying the company of each other.
The last day we were there, my parents and I visited Tulum which I had heard about, seen pictures of, but never really thought much of it. I am so glad I took this trip with them. It was bout an hour south on a bus of our resort, and was around $45. It was so worth it. We spent the first 45 minutes of the tour learning all about the ancient city of Tulum, the Mayans who created it, and all about the architecture and what it meant. Then we were free to roam. It was gorgeous. I am not one who gets all too into history, but I was fascinated by this tour and highly suggest you do it if ever in the area.

I came back to find CJ and a sick Keifer. She had diarrhea and was feverish. She had been teething all week (I'm sure much to the joy of our neighbors-- oh yeah, the walls aren't that thick and I know they could hear her crying "owie" every night, as we could hear them talking or coughing!!!). We weren't sure if the sickies were from teething or just an overabundance of fresh fruits and too much sun and pool action. Anyhoo, our girl and I and CJ strolled around the marketplace across the street from our resort and she was pretty quiet, much quieter than usual. She didn't make it to dinner that last night. Traveling home with her was a bit tougher, as she was exhausted and not feeling well. We made it home, and she was so glad to be home. It was so sweet to see her dancing and smiling and laughing when she was reunited with her puppers and her toys.
